She knows first hand what it is like to be told “we know your
child has a problem, but we do not know how to help him”.
She understands the frustration and the sometimes
endless battles it requires to obtain basic services “the no-
brainers” that a child in special education should be
receiving. She realizes that every child learns differently
and believes in advocating services that are not
characterized by providing bottled up, group focused, or the
traditional dumping ground classroom educations or
services with in-experienced educators/providers, but that
are truly based on a child's individual needs, wants and
desires and to be placed with staff who are skilled to deal
with and who capable the child's disability and their
individual needs. Kimberly holds a Masters in Public
Administration from the Department of Political Science
and a Graduate Certificate in Public Management, Iowa
State University. Her BS in Criminal Justice was received
from the Department of Political Science at Friends
University, Wichita Kansas.

Her educational interests have focused around in the field
of disabilities, non profit management and strategic
planning.  During her graduate employment as a research
assistant she led the Olive Tree Project in Iowa.  This was
a county wide community vision project that laid the ground
work for the county to strategically plan for its future.  Based
on this research she developed a tool for measuring
constitutes trust in local government.

Her professional interests are in all disabilities including
but not limited to autism spectrum disorders,
developmental disabilities, emotional impairments and
learning disabilities.  She has a personal interest in the
judicial system and the mistaken act of treating a juvenile
with disabilities as a criminal because of their disability
and the behaviors that may be a result thereof.

How Does This Make Her
Qualified To Help Others...
In her years of experience, resistance is
generally a sign of making someone do their
job when they are already tapped out;
resources are limited and/or they have no
support.  Whatever the reason, whatever the
situation there is always a way to make
things happen if you just begin to think out of
the box.

Kimberly has taken IEP teams where
communication is incurable to working
together by finding common interests,
gaining complete involvement, creating
ownership and hence having teams begin to
work together with respect and amicability.
There are always times to agree to disagree,
yet the work does not stop have to stop there.
Services and supports still need to be
obtained and delivered.  DisabilityGoTo can
assist with this.

Through Kimberly’s years of advocacy for her
own children and the many families she has
assisted along the way she adopted a value
of “everyone deserves the same
opportunities as the next person”.  In her own
efforts, which she consistently shares with
others, she believes “No’s are
opportunities”.  Generally, when told no “you
can not have something, something does not
exist or we do not do it that way”; she believes
this is motivated by a few factors including
but not limited to lack of authority to make or
allocate resources, ignorance or one is
merely speaking the wrong language or
talking to the wrong person. No’s are Yes’s
waiting to happen!
